“The universe is so vast, so wide to have such narrow and simplistic thinking. But nonetheless we run away from the new and unknown to validate ourselves.”
“It’s insanity taking effect.”

-whacks her behind the head- GET A GRIP GIRL!
Exterminate! Exterminate!
Oh no, looks like the reverse colours effect is overtaking her face!
What the heck is going on with this train of thought here?
“I know I had to help humans,” implying she accepted that despite her animal upbringing, “but not that human!” Okay, fine, your feelings make sense. You’re an idiot, considering this is part of the job you willingly accepted (very quickly, without much apparent thought), but they make sense.
But then she goes on with, “All humans are the same! All of them must be monsters!” Where is this coming from? How did that get triggered? Has, from her perspective, Azure (the only human we know of to show her kindness) betrayed her or something? Did I just miss it?
I don’t understand how she jumped from the clearly-new-at-being-a-starwarrior emotional mindset of, “I knew I had to help humans, but not that guy who murdered me!” to the emotionally unstable, “ALL OF THEM MUST BE BAD AND I WILL HELP NONE OF THEM,” in the span of literally three panels.
If only I could tell you everything.
I mean, I hope there’s eventually an explanation for her current seemingly erratic behavior, because I just don’t have any reason to care about or empathize with this character until then.
I like the concept of this story though and I do want to see where it goes, whether or not she grows on me.
Dark Matter? It’s seeping into her mind and body…
Oh man, you just made me realize something, and I apologize in advance for the onslaught of paragraphs.
If you’re right about Dark Matter being the cause here, and if the About section isn’t just bullshitting about what Dark Matter is and how it manifests and what it does and why, then mentally ill people must be the absolute bane of this universe.
Like, as a mortal, Dark Matter apparently can’t affect you directly. It can only fuck up the stars you make with your wishes when you either give up on your wish, or wish horrible things on others/yourself, or are selfish. (This has actually got me wondering what happens when people give up on old wishes to pursue things that are more appealing in comparison. Do you still get a black hole? Or are you supposed to have that same wish forever and not change until its fulfilled? Mortals obviously have no idea what’s going on with the stars and any real astronomical science clearly just isn’t a thing in this universe, but I’m still curious.)
But if you become a Starwarrior, who is apparently, upon entry, judging by Ezzy here, still completely imperfect and still has all the flaws of who they were as a mortal and if you start acting out on that because you’ve had no training to suppress it, are you just fucked? The Dark Matter takes over if you don’t fix yourself right then and there?
When you die, do mental illness related issues and fears and mortal desires just suddenly manifest a figurative off switch that you need to find and flip in order to not be consumed by Dark Matter your first time in the field? Is that how this works?
If you can’t solve your issues in a mortal body, what’s having the same mind but being immortal going to change?
What idiot decided that starting off new Starwarriors, who are clearly still mortal minded and entirely imperfect, with things that would rile them up the most and get the Dark Matter bubbling would be a good idea? You don’t throw an aspiring pilot on his first day of flight school into the cockpit and say, “Here you go, fly this plane, hope you don’t do everything wrong and kill us, ha ha.”
Is Ezzy’s trial just unique, compared to what the other Starwarriors needed to face?
I mean obviously we already know the outcome: Ezzy gets over it and becomes a captain and gets a cool little arm canon. But I REALLY hope we get answers.
I hope nobody’s taking all these questions as, “Sam’s just being an asshole.” You’ve actually got me quite hooked; it’s why I have the questions at all.
I actually really like this analysis, I’m glad that you gave such a deep insight into the current events of the comments.
Don’t worry, this isn’t negative at all. I’m actually extremely happy that someone is paying this much attention.
As for why Ezmeralda was thrust into such a difficult task early? Those answers are coming really soon.
But then if we didn’t know that Ezzy is going to get over it, then in the case what would be the point of dark matter attacking the town? Is it that when she would see her dad, who I’m guessing the dark matter turned into the monster that the guy was scared about, she would be driven completely over the edge? I know that she was starting her decent into madness when she saw her own body, but…
Now that I think about it, the dark matter couldn’t know about that. But if they did, somehow, which they might have their ways, then there is the possibility that they detected it and realized weakness in Ezzy’s Psyche, and decided to focus her a a lot?
I know that this whole thing may be hard to understand, so here’s the short version:
Why would the dark matter attack the town when Ezzy is already going mad? And could the dark matter have detected weakness when Ezzy saw her body?
I put the short version because it even confused ME.
Unfortunately, as this is a comic, we have limited access to information that we would otherwise get from a book or novel. Just like as a comic, it’s the only way to actually visualize what the author wants us to see. Compromises you see?
Actaully, now I’m wondering about one more thing, since SophiaTheMechanic worded it that way; is the Dark Matter an organization with people who do things, or is it latent Crazy Juice within everything that can only be suppressed by… not succumbing to ones mortal desires/not losing hope on wishes/etc.? Like I get there’s apparently Dark Warriors or something, but are they the Dark Matter or do they only serve the purposes of the Dark Matter and want for it to take over?
I want to tell what it is so bad, but sadly I can’t say anything at the moment. But these are all the right questions.
